How It All Began:During Christmas 1897, the Brass Band of the Rushden Salvation Army parted ways with the local Corps. The bandsmen were asked to return their uniforms and instruments — which they did with dignity and grace. Soon after, the “Tin Tabernacle” in Station Road invited the former players to form a new band. Some musicians were able to purchase their own instruments, while the church helped fund the rest. The band made its new church building its headquarters, and in 1898 the Rushden Independent Wesleyan Mission Band was proudly formed.

From 1898 to 1931, the band played weekly at Sunday open-air services and performed at concerts in local parks. In 1931, they decided to enter competitive contests to prove that “a Christian musical combination could stand up to the trained efforts of other brass bands.” They quickly found success, achieving impressive contest results over the following years and even making regular radio broadcasts until the outbreak of the Second World War. Tragically, the war claimed the lives of several band members, leaving the band depleted for a time. Yet the dedication of its remaining players ensured its survival. Through resilience and determination, numbers slowly grew again and the band continued its proud tradition of music and service.

In 2009, the band faced another major challenge when the Musical Director resigned and several players left. It was a difficult period, but the remaining members chose to stand firm and rebuild. Banding is a team effort — and this is a determined team. Since then, the band has carefully strengthened its sound and resources. By investing in high-quality second-hand instruments rather than entry-level new ones, they have steadily improved their standard. Particular focus has been given to developing the percussion section, including the addition of a professional drum kit, xylophone, and timpani. This progress has been achieved without access to lottery funding due to the band’s church links — making their accomplishments even more remarkable. Today, fourteen current members have joined within the past five and a half years. The band proudly includes eleven teenagers, four of whom progressed from its own Training Band — a testament to its commitment to nurturing young talent.

Community support remains at the heart of everything the band does. Each year, a charity is selected to benefit from fundraising efforts. In three previous years alone, the band raised £7,000 for chosen causes. Proceeds from their CD “All the Fun of…” are dedicated to this cause.

The band continues to grow and develop, performing between fifteen and twenty engagements each year. While always striving to improve, it remains rooted in the same values that inspired its founding in 1898: faith, friendship, resilience, and a love of music. Over 125 years on, the story is still being written.
